Earth Day on Cuttyhunk Island

On a very cold, blustery day the Cuttyhunk kids wanted to do something to help the Earth.  Gwen and Carter did some research about Earth Day to find out what it is and when it all started.  Then we went out to Channel Beach with Ms. Dunn and got busy picking up trash!

Earth Day was first celebrated in 1970 in the United States.  Now many countries across the world celebrate Earth Day or Earth Week.  Where do you think all of this trash comes from?

Earth Day is celebrated every year on April 22nd.
Here's Carter picking up some more trash from Channel Beach and Gwen's taking a break.

On Earth Day people pick up trash and do things to make the world better and cleaner! Here's Gwen lugging a bag of trash back to our pile.

Ms. Dunn took our picture with all of the trash we picked up on Channel Beach.  Can you believe how much we found?  Ms. Cathy is helping us too!
Look closely by the water and you'll see Toby who didn't help us pick up very much.

What did you do to help the planet on Earth Day?

Until next time,
The Cuttyhunk Kids

  1. Congratulations to everyone. Every "litter-bit" helps.

  2. Great job!! In Florida we get trash from all over the world. I like it when I find coconuts or seeds that travel thousands of miles from other countries and land on our beach.
I do not like the man made materials that are found in the waterways or the fishing string left by fisherman that the birds get caught in. But I participate in an organized clean up through Rookery Bay Estuary Preserve,(check out their web site)
